Overview: Searching
OPEN DISCOVERY Review uses a powerful search engine that can search terabytes in seconds. It does this by building a comprehensive index of terms and data for each case added to OPEN DISCOVERY Review. Using an index allows search speed and performance to be optimized.
Searching includes finding documents by criteria that exist in the database. For example, you can search for documents that are tagged a certain way, or search for a term that exists in a specific field of the database.
Search results can include either all documents matching your search criteria, or a random sampling of these documents. Random sampling allows you to focus your evaluation on a representative set of documents.

Note: Administrators can define lists of related search terms (words, phrases, or expressions) of particular importance, and find documents containing these terms. This function is called “keyword searching” and it can help administrators with document management, review, and other tasks. For more information, see Create and Schedule Keyword Lists. |
Permissions Required
Specific permissions exist for searching within the Review module. If you have any questions about your permissions, contact your OPEN DISCOVERY Review administrator.
Advanced Search
In OPEN DISCOVERY Review, Advanced Search allows you to easily construct complex search expressions or specialized searches and display results in the Results tab. In the Visual Search dashboard, go to Need to construct an Advanced Search? at the upper right corner and click the link. For more information, see Work With Advanced Search.
Visual Search
When you open a review case, it defaults to the Visual Search dashboard. Here you can combine text-based and metadata-based criteria into a single search. You have options to specify a valid date range and to include document family members. In addition, you can perform and review searches by using one of three 2-dimensional charts as well as a Concept Wheel. This type of searching lets you view results in a manner that correlates between two or more data fields, or in relation to a data set as a whole.
For more information, see Work With the Visual Search Dashboard.
Search Fundamentals
Several concepts apply whether you are using the Visual Search or the Advanced Search functions. For more information, see Default Search Assumptions.
